What is Facelift?

Facelift or “rhytidectomy”, is a surgical procedure that is performed to restore a more youthful, natural look on your face.

The impacts of the aging process, the gravity and the sun result in your face looking tired, with the formation of folds around the jaw, the cheeks and the neck. In addition, neck muscle looseness and excess fat make your face look older and tired. A Facelift addresses all these problems, and with the adoption of the latest techniques, you get perfectly natural effects.

On top of that, at Face of Athens Clinic we can achieve excellent effects on all types of Facelift, safely and completely painlessly, with local anesthesia!! That means that the patients go home the same day and return to their activities as soon as possible.

With a Facelift the underlying muscles are tightened, laxity disappears, and the skin smooths out, the accumulated fat is removed. Even more, with invisible incisions. If you feel young and want to look young, it is Facelift surgery that will make your face look younger, more vigorous and fresher.

What do we do differently at Facelift at Face of Athens? We treat each patient differently: on the basis of their wishes and their special anatomical features. Therefore, our experienced surgeons carefully assess each patient and develop a surgical plan that meets exclusively their needs and expectations.

Are you a suitable facelift candidate? The assessment meeting with the plastic surgeon

Facelift surgical procedure is usually an excellent option for women and men with severe sagging, excess skin and volume loss on the face and everything they entail. These are the first things the plastic surgeon will consider at your first appointment.

However, besides that, your plastic surgeon will need to be informed whether you have any health problems, due to which you should avoid surgery. Moreover, he will discuss your expectations from the facelift with you, and he will recommend the facelift technique that is the most suitable for your needs.

In addition, he will assess your bone structure and determine if additional corrective procedures are needed (e.g. blepharoplasty) to get the optimal overall effects.

Finally, he will make some measurements, such as facial dimensions, skin thickness, skin texture and elasticity.

TYPES OF FACELIFT

Deep plane facelift and SMAS Facelift are the two main facelift techniques. Followed by Mini Facelift, also known as Short Scar Facelift, MACS Facelift, S-Lift or Weekend Facelift.

Deep plane facelift

(Deep plane facelift)

The core principle of deep plane facelift is that it is applied under the skin and below the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS); as a result, there is no tension on the skin. That is the detail that offers natural effects and not unnaturally stretched skin.
During the procedure, the surgeon releases four key ligament groups (tissue elevation starts from about the corner of your eye and uniformly continues up to the neck) and moves everything upward (rather than backward). This vertical elevation eliminates double chin, smooths out the neck, while cheekbones and facial muscles are repositioned higher on the face.

The effects of Deep Plane Facelift

  • Perfectly natural effect Deep Plane Facelift intervenes in multiple tissue layers, thus offering perfectly natural effect, highly rejuvenated look on the face, and unchanged facial features and expressiveness.
  • Well defined facial contour, without sagging by repositioning the deep structures of the face higher on the face, the oval shape of the face becomes clear, as the lower jaw is sculpted.
  • Longer lasting effects Deep Plane Facelift offers the effects longer duration, compared to other techniques.
  • Targeted treatment of sagging at the midface and the lower face. Simultaneous removal of excess skin.
  • Improvement of perioral wrinkles in the majority of patients a very high rate of improvement of these “difficult” wrinkles and folds is achieved.

SMAS Facelift

(Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System)

SMAS means Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System and it includes the muscles, the ligaments and the other facial support structures, which loosen up as we grow older. SMAS starts from the areas close to our ears and moves downwards, towards the neck. That’s why Facelift SMAS is a surgical procedure that tightens and lifts the midface and the lower face. The incision begins in the hairline of the temporal region, circles around the ear lobe, ending at the posterior hairline. Then, the fatty tissue of the area is redistributed, while deeper facial layers (such as SMAS and underlying muscles) are lifted with traction until we get the desired effect.

At the final stage, skin redraping is performed at the area and excess skin is removed. It is perhaps the most popular Facelift technique, and it has proved to be an excellent option for patients that want an overall improvement of their face and neck, with elimination of sagging skin and muscle tightening.

The effects of Facelift SMAS

  • Reduction or elimination of sagging at the chin and the entire lower jaw
  • Reduction or elimination of the wrinkles and the lines formed around the mouth (grief or marionette wrinkles)
  • Treatment of sagging of neck skin (turkey neck). Quite often, SMAS facelift is combined with neck lift
  • Delay in the appearance of new signs of aging
  • Perfectly natural effect with hidden scars at the hairline and behind the ear
  • Quicker recovery compared to Deep Plane Facelift.

or Short Scar Facelift, MACS Facelift, S-Lift or Weekend Facelift

Mini Facelift is also known as Short Scar Facelift, MACS Facelift, S-Lift or Weekend Facelift. It is an option for patients who want a rejuvenated and fresh face, perfectly natural effect, but, at the same time, do not want a long recovery period. In addition, mini Facelift most strongly appeals to patients with mild signs of aging.

During the procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia, smaller incisions are made at the temporal region or around the ear. At these techniques, the plastic surgeon has limited access to the neck, while there is not much improvement at the nasolabial folds.

Combined procedures

How can you achieve total facial rejuvenation?

Facelift can be combined with many other treatments to address concerns affecting the upper face areas or to further enhance the overall effects and to create a more complete aesthetic makeover.

  • Blepharoplasty
Facelift cannot reduce excess skin at the upper eyelid or under-eye bags. An upper or lower blepharoplasty or their combination will be very effective along with a facelift.

  • Neck lift
When sagging at the neck is severe and reaches lower neck, Facelift is not enough to correct it. At the same surgery, it is common for neck lift to be performed.

  • Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid
Over time, our lips normally lose their volume. Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid will further enhance your youthful look.

  • Lip Lift
Lip lift practically shortens the distance between the upper lip and the nose and. An important detail on the face that makes you look younger.

  • Facial fat transfer
When facelift is not enough to restore volume loss on all areas of the face, fat transfer is the solution. The procedure is quick and simple, and it is performed with fat collected by the patient, immediately processed and injected at the “target” areas.

  • Brow lift
Brow lift is performed to lift the brows and position them at the natural position of youth (namely at the level of the superior orbital rim or higher).

  • Laser Skin Resurfacing
When sagging at the face is combined with skin texture issues, some Laser Skin Resurfacing sessions will give you the desired effects. Besides the improvement on the skin surface, Laser Skin Resurfacing boosts collagen and elastin production.
Facelift FAQ
Frequently asked questions

The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia; thus, patients feel no pain. During the recovery period, symptoms like discomfort, stretching sensation, swelling, bruising are well tolerated by most patients and can be treated without medication or with mild painkillers.

After the procedure, the patient should have an elastic bandage that will help the surgical wound heal faster and without complications. During the first 2 weeks you should have it 24 hours a day, and the next 2 weeks only during the night.

Sutures are removed in10-14 days after the procedure. You should wait about 7-10 days to return to your daily activities, while you will be able to work out after about a month. The incisions, although at non-visible sites, will also heal gradually. After 2-3 weeks they will be fully covered with makeup.

This can only be done with the help of the plastic surgeon. He will assess your skin, your stage of aging, and he will be honest with you on the expectations you should have.

Although the facelift effects vary among patients, they all usually look 10 -12 years younger. Regardless of how successful or not a facelift will be considered, it will certainly make you look younger, and you will always look younger than your age.

A Facelift procedure can deliver effects that will last for many years (10-15). However, it is important to remember that the natural aging process is ongoing and the skin on your face will keep being affected by it. Even so, you will always look 10-15 years younger than your age. And if you take care of your skin with the proper skincare products and take care of your diet and sleep, you will never grow old!

Signs of aging do not emerge at the same age or at the same severity for everyone. That’s why there are patients that are considered suitable for Facelift in their 40s, and others after 50. There are also many cases of patients that delay making the decision for such a surgery and undergo a Facelift after 60. The ideal age for a Facelift mainly depends on the patients’ skin condition and their expectations from the procedure, and less on their age.

The more you keep your head upright during recovery, the better. The plastic surgeon may also recommend that you take some vitamins, and the frequent application of cool patches or ice.

Natural effects are the primary objective for the plastic surgeons of the Face of Athens. Highlighting your natural features, maintaining your expressiveness and your “invisible” makeover are a non-negotiable aim of each Facelift.
