What is hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in the skin. It has the property to absorb 5 times its weight in water.

This makes its role valuable in skin hydration, its elasticity and firmness, and in maintaining its volume. As we grow older, hyaluronic acid naturally decreases in our body and face, causing respective consequences. Thankfully, we can treat these consequences with synthetic hyaluronic acid.

Injectable hyaluronic acid

Injectable (synthetic) hyaluronic acid is a transparent, soft, supple gel, which is injected into the problematic areas with syringes or microcannulas. The treatment is painless and usually no local anesthetic is required. The effects are immediate, although they are finalized in the following 20 days, and they can last from 8 months and up to two years, depending on the quality of the material.

Apart from “filling in” the wrinkles, hyaluronic acid gives the skin elasticity, hydration, firmness and freshness.

HYALURONIC ACID
Different types of hyaluronic acid
Injectable hyaluronic acid is always in a gel-like form, colorless, and odorless. However, it is available in two or three different types, depending on its density. That’s why in a plastic surgery clinic you will see various packages of injectable hyaluronic acid, which are suitable for different parts of the face; others are suitable for application on the body. In general, the finer the wrinkles to be treated the thinner the hyaluronic acid used, and the more intense the volume loss is, the thicker material is required to restore it.
For example, we use thick hyaluronic acid for the nasolabial folds, the cheekbones and the chin, and low-density hyaluronic acid under the eyes where the skin is thin, and on the lips that we want to remain soft.

Your plastic surgeon will choose the most suitable type of hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid on the Face: where it is applied

Hyaluronic acid at the facial contour – Women love hyaluronic acid at the contour, because it helps recover its oval shape that is lost over time. Men ask for it to accentuate their angles. What we know for sure is that hyaluronic acid at the facial contour enhances the charm of both sexes!

Hyaluronic acid under the Eyes (Tear trough) – Hyaluronic acid offers spectacular effects in the treatment of dark circles and volume loss at the “valley of tears”.  The grooves are filled in, the shadows fade, and you look young again.

Hyaluronic acid at the temples: Many of us don’t recognize the importance of the temples in the overall youthful look of the face. That’s why when hyaluronic acid restores their volume loss, we are impressed by the effects.

Hyaluronic acid at the cheekbones – Hyaluronic acid has proved to be valuable for the mid-face. Its application on the cheekbones restores the volume required to fill in the cheeks and to eliminate skin laxity due to fat reduction in this area.

Hyaluronic acid at the Nose – Hyaluronic acid is the material that offers what we call “liquid rhinoplasty”. With the application of hyaluronic acid at key points, the nose can be straightened, lifted, become thinner, more symmetrical and certainly be in perfect harmony with your face.

Hyaluronic acid at the Lips – Hyaluronic acid can enhance the volume of the lips and increase their size, improve their contour, correct asymmetries and hydrate them. What many doctors suggest is for hyaluronic acid to be inserted gradually on the lips, at different sessions, until the desirable effects are achieved.

Hyaluronic acid at the Chin – If the chin does not have the projection you want, or if you wish to reshape it, hyaluronic acid is your bloodless choice. Examining the proportions of the face before the application of hyaluronic acid on the chin is a very importance stage.

Hyaluronic acid at Marionette Lines – Hyaluronic acid at the lip lines offers not only a more youthful look but also a more joyful one, as it practically eliminates the wrinkles that make the face look tired and sad.

Hyaluronic acid at the neck – Hyaluronic acid at the neck can be applied either in the form of mesotherapy, to offer deep hydration and enhance collagen production, or locally at the horizontal lines to “fill” them with acid. Of course, these two techniques can be applied in the same session; for even more dramatic effects, combined treatment with Botox is recommended.

Hyaluronic acid for Smoker’s Wrinkles (over the upper lip) – In the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon, hyaluronic acid is accurately applied to the vertical lines over the upper lip. The lines “soften” as they fill in, and the face is rejuvenated.

Hyaluronic acid at the Glabella – Hyaluronic acid can even “fill” the deepest lines between the eyebrows. In combination with Botox, the effects are exceptional.

Hyaluronic acid on the Deep Lines on the Forehead – When wrinkles on the forehead have been 'engraved' and have become deep lines, Botox cannot eliminate them. Hyaluronic acid is what can smooth out the skin at your forehead.

Hyaluronic acid for Deep Eye Wrinkles – The skin around our eyes is very delicate and therefore more vulnerable to the development of lines and wrinkles. In this case, the combination of hyaluronic acid and Botox will make your look youthful again.

Hyaluronic acid at the Earlobes – Less well known, yet with exceptional effects, the use of hyaluronic acid at the earlobes can restore their volume loss, smooth out fine lines, even correct injuries caused by earrings.

At which areas of the body is hyaluronic acid applied?
photo
Ηyaluronic acid has also proved to be a valuable material for the body, and it offers excellent, long-lasting effects. The material for the body is thicker compared to that applied on the face and it is injected with larger cannulas. An experienced plastic surgeon uses hyaluronic acid in many areas of the body, mainly to restore volume, but also to correct asymmetries. The areas of the body where hyaluronic acid is more often injected are the following:

- The neckline to eliminate wrinkles

- The back of the hands

- The buttocks (hyaluronic acid offers Brazilian but without surgery)

- The calves

-  Any area with scars that can be smoothed out

Moreover, hyaluronic acid can be used in the body as part of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, to restore soft tissue volume or even to correct tissue defects, which are created as a result of oncological surgeries or after trauma reconstruction procedures.

How hyaluronic acid treatment is performed
photo
In hyaluronic acid treatment on the face, examining the face anatomy and drawing up the injection plan are equally important to the injection of the material, towards very natural effects that will not alter your features or distort your face.

Before the treatment starts, the plastic surgeon will discuss your expectations, will answer your questions and will explain to you the effects that will be achieved.

The treatment duration is usually not more than half an hour. It starts with the application of a local anesthetic cream to ensure that you feel no pain. Hyaluronic acid is injected by using either very fine syringes or microcannulas.
HYALURONIC ACID - PRICE
How much does hyaluronic acid treatment cost?

The cost of hyaluronic acid treatment is not the same for everyone, as it is affected by three main factors: the quality of the material, its density and the quantity hyaluronic acid required by the individual needs of each patient.
The price for a syringe of 1ml of premium quality hyaluronic acid ranges from 200€ - 250€; for an even more premium quality, the respective cost ranges from 300€ - 350€
HYALURONIC ACID FAQ
Frequently asked questions

The treatment effects are visible immediately after the treatment. However, it takes about 2 weeks for the effects to be finalized.

You’d better not rub, not apply pressure to the area where hyaluronic acid was injected into the face. If you need to massage gently or do specific movements, your doctor will instruct you. In the first 1-2 days, it is recommended that you avoid intense physical activity and intense facial expressions or biting your lips, if you have applied hyaluronic acid there. Avoiding the use of hot water and topical ice application on the injection sites will help in reducing the possibility of oedema occurrence. In the first weeks after hyaluronic acid treatment, it is very important to drink a lot of water!

The choice of an experienced doctor, combined with certified and safe materials, almost eliminates the side effects. Allergic reactions, like edema and redness, have been recorded very rarely. Minor bruises and edema are observed more often at the injection sites; yet they subside very quickly.

The duration of the effects depends, just like the cost, on various factors. Depending on the material quality, the area of the application, and the metabolic rate of the material, which is different for each body, the effects of hyaluronic acid can last from 6 to 18 months.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the pharmaceutical preparations for which there is an antidote! It is called hyaluronidase, and it is a liquid substance that is injected at the areas where hyaluronic acid was applied. Hyaluronidase dissolves hyaluronic acid and restores the area where treatment was applied to its original condition.
