What is Botox?

Since 2002, when Botox got FDA approval for use in aesthetic medicine, it has been the most popular non-invasive beauty treatment. Yet, it had already been used for this purpose since 1989. It is based on the injection of a specific neurotoxin, Botulinum toxin type A or botulinum toxin, which, when applied at the recommended dosage, it is perfectly safe for the body.

How does Botox work?

What botulinum toxin does is to temporarily inactivate the muscles into which it is injected, preventing them from contracting and thus preventing the formation of wrinkles on the skin.

Botox effects depend on the doctor applying it. Experience and expertise are the two indispensable conditions for a face to be youthful again, without losing its expressiveness.

After a successful Botox treatment, the comment you will receive is that your face is very relaxed and fresh.

Which wrinkles does Botox treat?
However, it can smooth them out and also prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming static. Botox is a treatment of choice not only for reducing or eliminating wrinkles but also for preventing them. Depending on when the treatment begins, it can help stop the formation of wrinkles and therefore delay the signs of aging.
More specifically, there are two types of wrinkles: static and dynamic. Static wrinkles are those that have already become etched into our face, while dynamic wrinkles are the ones that form with every expression (smiling, frowning, grimacing), which is why they are also called expression lines. Botox can eliminate expression lines (as it prevents the muscle contractions that cause them), but it does not treat static wrinkles. However, it can soften them and also prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming static.

Facial Botox Treatment Areas

Forehead Wrinkles

Botox is an ideal way to prevent or treat horizontal wrinkles that form on the forehead when raising the eyebrows in expressions of surprise or disapproval.

Glabellar Lines (Frown Lines)

A few small Botox injections between the eyebrows are enough to smooth the vertical lines that appear when frowning, often forming the “11” lines between the eyebrows.

Crow’s Feet (Outer Eye Wrinkles)

Botox is applied around the eyes to treat the wrinkles known as crow’s feet—radiating lines that appear at the outer corners of the eyes when smiling or squinting.

Bunny Lines (Nose Wrinkles)

Botox is injected at the upper sides of the nose to smooth the wrinkles that form when the skin of the nose scrunches from smiling. These lines are called bunny lines because they resemble the folds on a rabbit’s nose..

Gummy Smile

A gummy smile is when excessive gum shows while smiling. Two Botox injections, one on each side at the base of the nose, allow a slight relaxation of the upper lip, reducing gum visibility.

Marionette Lines (Sad Lines)

These are wrinkles that form at the corners of the mouth, making the face appear sad or downturned. Botox is applied to the depressor anguli oris muscle, as these lines are primarily caused by its overactivity, which pulls down the corners of the mouth.

Smoker’s Lines (Perioral Wrinkles)

Botox effectively smooths the vertical lines that appear above the lips, commonly referred to as smoker’s lines.

Masseter Hypertrophy

Enlarged masseter muscles can give the face a square appearance. Botox injections in the masseters relax these muscles, resulting in a more oval facial contour.

Platysma (Nefertiti Lift)

The platysma is a superficial, flat muscle of the neck. Its contraction creates prominent vertical neck bands that, over time, can become permanent. Botox can soften or even eliminate these lines, providing a smoother, more youthful neck appearance.

How Botox works?

The application of Botox is an easy, safe, and effective procedure. During the treatment, you will only feel slight pinpricks in the injection areas. For most patients, the procedure is very well tolerated and is performed without the use of anesthetic cream. However, if you wish to use mild local anesthesia, the doctor will work with you to maximize your comfort level.

The injections are administered with a tiny needle, and the entire treatment takes only a few minutes. Small bumps may appear at the injection sites, but they subside very quickly. Immediately afterward, you can continue with your daily routine. For the rest of the day, it is recommended to avoid intense activities, avoid exposing your face to heat sources, refrain from massaging your face, and avoid lying down for the next 3–4 hours.

How much does Botox cost?

Prices depend on the individual needs of each patient and on the doses required to achieve the desired result. A person with deep and pronounced wrinkles has different needs compared to someone whose wrinkles have not yet become static. For individual areas, the cost is determined on a case-by-case basis. As a reference, Botox for the upper third of the face costs €250, for the neck €250, and for the glabella (between the eyebrows) €120.

One thing to be cautious about is a very low treatment price, as it may indicate the use of lower-quality products. It is important to choose clinics that use certified injectable products.
BOTOX FAQ
Frequently asked questions

The effects of the treatment can be seen as early as the second day. The final result is determined between the 2nd and 3rd week after the procedure. This is also the period during which the doctor needs to evaluate the outcome to decide whether a follow-up dose is necessary.

After the treatment, you will be asked to avoid physical exercise for the rest of the day, and it is prohibited to apply pressure to the injection sites or expose the area to heat (hot showers, hair dryers) for 5–6 hours.

There is no specific age for someone to start Botox. It depends on their genetics and how they age, how expressive they are, whether they want to prevent the formation of wrinkles or reduce or erase existing ones. In any case, when wrinkles on your face begin to concern you, it is a good idea to schedule an evaluation with a plastic surgeon to answer any questions you may have and possibly develop an anti-aging care plan together.

Botox usually lasts about 4–6 months. Some people may see results for a longer period. To maintain and extend a youthful appearance, it is helpful to:
  • Protect your skin from the sun, avoiding exposure during midday hours
  • Use sunscreen daily
  • Care for your skin with moisturizing and anti-aging products
  • Drink plenty of water and consume a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Avoid smoking!!

Your doctor is the right person to recommend the schedule for follow-up sessions. Usually, the next treatment is done before the effects of the previous one have completely worn off.
