What is facial fat transfer

Facial fat transfer claims the first place among deep rejuvenation and antiaging treatments.

What it offers is addressing the impacts of aging on the face, with transfer of autologous fat, namely fat collected by the patient. This fat is suctioned from body areas with “full” fat storage areas (e.g. abdomen, thighs), undergoes specific processes and is then injected to target-sites on the face, namely cheekbones, nasolabial folds, perioral, under the eyes, to the temples and lips. With further processing, fat is transformed into material for mesotherapy, which is applied across the face, the neck and the neckline.

What facial fat transfer achieves
At facial fat transfer we use the patient’s fat, in the same way we would use hyaluronic acid or another filler. Fat is considered by many to be the ideal filler for facial rejuvenation, as it is 100% biocompatible, it offers smooth and natural effects, and theoretically it is a permanent intervention.

The autologous fat we use for the facial rejuvenation restores the volume at the areas where loss is  observed, and it deeply rejuvenates the skin, improving its tone and texture and making it smooth, firm and radiant.
The facial areas where fat can be injected are:
-        temples
-        deep wrinkles, wherever they have been formed, even at the forehead and the glabella
-        cheekbones
-        cheeks
-        nasolabial folds
-        vertical lines of the upper lip
-        perioral, to restore volume
-        marionette wrinkles (or grief winkles around the lips)
-        jawline contour
-        chin
-        lips
-        scars and burns

How the procedure is performed
photo
Facial fat transfer is a minimally invasive procedure, which can be performed under local anesthesia, or conscious sedation or general anesthesia (rarely); it lasts about 1 hour.

Initially, the plastic surgeon chooses the site on the body with excess fat to proceed to liposuction. Local anesthesia is performed at this site and, a few minutes later, the fat is collected with special cannulas, with a closed system in a special sterile bag. After the bag, it is transferred with sterile syringes for processing at a device called lipocube. With successive transfers of fat through lipocube the fat becomes thinner and thinner to be suitable for use on the face. When it reaches the desired composition, the processed fat is inserted into sterile syringes and injected into the face with special microcannulas.

This procedure is generally painless, and no sutures are used.

Recovery
After the facial fat transfer, the patient is expected to have a mild oedema 3-4 days, and possibly bruising, at both the donor and the recipient area of the fat (face). Cool compresses significantly help them recede faster. Recovery is easy and quick, and the patients’ most common “complaint” is tenderness and stretching sensation on the face. Return to the daily activities is possible after 5-7 days. Workout and intense physical activity are allowed after 20-25 days.

During the first days after the fat transfer you may see your face “fuller” than you expected. Certainly, the oedema is a cause for that, but it is also possible that the plastic surgeon has “overcorrected” your face, namely he has used bigger amount of fat than necessary. This happens very often, as part of the fat transferred to the face will be catabolized and will not remain on your face. The percentage of fat that remains at its new position ranges between 40% and 60% and it is different for each patient. To increase this percentage, the processed fat is enhanced with patient’s PRP or PRF.

The effects: When they are visible - When they are finalized

Although the facial lip transfer effects are visible after the procedure oedema recedes, it will take over 1-3 for the results to be finalized.

That is the period that your body can absorb a percentage of the fat transferred. After these first months the result can be considered permanent.

This specific procedure can be repeated as many times as required, to achieve the desirable effect.
FACIAL FAT TRASNFER / LIPOSCULPTURE FAQ

This procedure is recommended for healthy people that either due to age, or genetically, or due to various conditions or medication develop significant facial lipodystrophy.  In addition, the ones wishing to rejuvenate their face, highlight its angles and get a more youthful look without using fillers, and by avoiding a facelift procedure, are suitable for facial fat transfer.

If it is mild sagging, facial fat transfer will certainly improve it. However, only a facelift procedure can offer spectacular effects when it comes to treating sagging. Actually, very often, facial fat transfer is a treatment complementary to facelift procedure.

Any area of the body with accumulated fat can be a donor area. More often, liposuction is performed from:
-        the abdomen
-        the inner surface of the thighs
-        the saddlebags
-        the sides of the lower back

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. One of the fat transfer advantages is that it does not only restore the volume on the face, but it also rejuvenates the skin, improving its thickness, quality and texture. In addition, fat is never palpable, and it is not visible under the skin, which may happen with fillers. Finally, the final effects of fat transfer are permanent, while the maximum duration for fillers is 18 to 20 months.

Οn the other hand, application of fillers is completed faster, does not require liposuction or anesthesia. Moreover, the effects are immediately visible (fillers are not absorbed by the body like fat) and are finalized in the next 2 weeks, while with fat transfer 2-3 months may be required. Finally, after the application of fillers you can return to your activities immediately, as there is no recovery period.
